CHER Docent Application Process:
Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve (CHER) Docent Program
Volunteer your time to assist visitors in appreciating and protecting this beautiful Reserve!
If you enjoy spending time in nature and being outdoors, and you look forward to giving back to the community, promoting conservation and stewardship, as well as sharing knowledge with others, you are the perfect person to join our volunteer team at CHER!
CHER Volunteers are part of the Calavera Trails Coalition Volunteer Program. They are trained by our staff and and the California Dept of Fish and Wildlife on a variety of tasks that support the programs at CHER (see below). CHER volunteers have to sign a duty statement and be fingerprinted and go through a background check if working with minors under the age of 18.
Hike/Ride Docents (fitness and interpretive hikes/rides)
Help CHER by doing the things you love most: hiking in the beautiful outdoors, while delivering a well-thought guided program to inspire and connect visitors to the natural and cultural resources of the park. But it is not just about hiking, it is about providing hospitality to and performing effective communication with the public.
Training for Hike/Ride Docents is generally offered once a year in late summer/early fall. Check with park staff about training dates.
Trail Crew Volunteers
Give back to the mountain by fixing trails and helping to remove non-native plant species! The Trail Crew meets every third Tuesday of the month.
Recruitment for Trail Crew volunteers is ongoing. We offer free training for this process.
??Astronomy Program Volunteers
With 300-500 people on the mountain during the terrific monthly astronomy programs, this popular program can use a few extra hands to help plan, set up and greet people. And you will learn inspiring new astronomical discoveries! How could you pass up an evening under the stars above the fog?
Recruitment for Astronomy Program volunteers is ongoing.
